In Concert started the annual “Anti-Crise” festival in September 2004, in parallel with the presidential crisis at the time. The first concerts took place at Zico House in Beirut between 10 and 13 September, and were attended by hundreds of musical fans. From its very beginnings it was a mixed musical festival both in terms of style and influence, hosting local as well as international musicians from around the world.
In September 2005, the festival was reduced to a single concert due to the political situation in the country which limited the participating bands to two: one from Lebanon and one from France.
In 2006, the festival was canceled due to the Israeli aggression of the summer.
In 2007, IN CONCERT is presenting a new format for “Anti-Crise” in order to mimic the current situation in Lebanon: it drags through several rolling episodes, starting from September when the presidential election were originally intended to take place and continuing until February, when they may still have yet to take place. The first concerts took place on the 7th and 8th of September 07; respectively in Beirut, at the Sanayeh gardens and in Tyr at the old port. The first episode in September was composed of Lebanese groups who focused on creating a colorful and joyful atmosphere as a counter to the continuing grind of daily Lebanese life; passing through an economic and political crisis, people’s moods are also subject to the same gloom and tension as that which grips the entire country. The 2nd episode of the festival was held on the 5th of December 2007 at the Assembly Hall in the American University of Beirut. IN CONCERT, in association with the Goethe institute, presented a world Jazz concert by the group Cyminology, from Germany.
In the current political situation, where cultural events are forced to take a backseat to the prevailing struggles with massive inflation of prices, privatization of the public sector and a criminally low minimum wage combined with rising unemployment, a considerable number of people have stopped taking interest in general cultural and artistic activities.
Faced with this climate, we are feeling a general lack of motivation from the public at large. In addition, the absence of cultural activities in schools, families and within the context of education also contributes to the stagnation of public interest in cultural artistic events.
That’s why a music festival committed to liberating music from tickets and reservations, reclaiming it from those that would use it as a commodity and reintroducing it as a means to express love and freedom and dialogue between all is all the more important. Our festivals and artists are a protest, a defiance, a reminder that art and people come before politics and crises, and that no matter how bleak the days, music is always a hope and a light in the darkness.
